I downloaded and installed Eeebuntu 3.0 on my machine, thanks to those who offered help on fixing the graphics issues that I was having, I had already started the reload before some of the suggestions were posted. In one way I am sorry that I did not get a chance to see if these solutions would have …

You mention that you like the fact that it is configured perfectly right off the bat, just like windows....

However, if you buy vanilla windows (not from dell for example), you do not have many of those programs. You may have outlook express for email (which doesn't work with internet mail programs now), IE for a browser, and maybe wordpad.

However, VLC, a full Office package, etc are not set up for you by default, and the microsoft office is certainly not free. Not to mention needing antivirus, antispyware, and trying to find programs all over the place.

Both of the system's niceties are due to the time and forethought of the supplier, and they should be commended. I'm happy you found a distro that fit you better, and I hope now you can focus on playing more instead of fixing and tweaking.

Good luck, we're all rooting for you.

One more note:

Next time, think about making home its own partition - it will save all your files, etc, when you move to a new distro. The only downside is you need to have an estimate of hard drive space used by the distro, but you can usually find that on the diistros site, then add a couiple of gbs just in case.

Either way, doing it that way saves a LOT of time and redoing things. Just a thought in case you think of doing this on another comp.

I find that the nice thing about Linux is that you can customize it to your liking. You really shouldn't just be satisfied with what you get out of the box, try looking through add/remove and www.gnome-look.org for some themes. You won't regret it.

Of course it's thanks to the EU and other legal activities that MSFT is unable to include applications in the installation media.

Nice GUI. Might have to try Eeebuntu, I think. The brown of Ubuntu eee is not my cup of tea either! And I've had to revert to Flash 9 to get YouTube etc working. I'm waiting for further reports from you before I go ahead

There is a BIG difference when MS forces the OEMs NOT to include any other browser on the WIN computer but IE. IF MS allowed the OEMs to place Netscape or Firefox along with IE on the desktop and let the users choose, then there wouldn't have been a problem or issues with the EU. Both Firefox and Netscape are FREE browsers like IE. MS would NOT have lost financially from including these browsers. Also, if IE is that GOOD, why wouldn't MS agree to it since theirs (IE) would the choice of the users.

All good so far with Eeebuntu. Loving it

If I am honest I am enjoying Linux a little more than I thought I would, but Eee really puts the icing on the cake.

Dan's desktop desktop on his netbookHello again all,Well, I have started the audio side of things in Linux. I installed Ardour. It automatically configured itself to the inputs and outputs of my eeepc, making it good to go almost straight after install. So, I took my subnotebook to a recording session of  Afterlives, a popular audio d…

I have been playing around a little too much with the operating system over the last few days and somewhere along the line I have managed to mess the whole lot up.I am unsure as to when I did this, but there are one or two things that are just not working correctly.  The graphics are one part.  At o…

Hi

If you go to your home folder and press 'Ctrl'+'H' you can see hidden files. All hidden files or folders are beginning with a dot. Your configuration files of thunderbird are stored in '.mozilla-thunderbird'. So if you backup this folder and replace after reinstalling your pc you don't need to configure all your email-accounts again.

Something that I've found handy when resolving graphics problems (I also had the problem with the advanced graphics options disapearing on me after previously working) is to hit escape at the grub loader, and then load ubuntu in recovery mode.

from there there'll be a console that has an option such as 'automatically attempt to fix graphics problems'

this sorted out my display issues and also a problem with playing movies.

If you want to use an Ubuntu-derivation for your eee, I'd reccomend Ubuntu Netbook Remix instead, but that's your choice.

On a tip off from "Photon" who was good enough to say hello in the forums here at Ayetea.com I tried to install a screenshot application.  Up until now I have been using the screenshot application that came within the Ubuntu 9.04 distribution.  Its actually a pretty good little utility, I especially…

Re:Installing a Linux Application from Outside the Supplied Repositories

It might be more precise to rename the article to "Installing an Application from Outside the Supplied Repositories in Debian-Derived Distros." Because the process is quite different in other Linux distros.

Keep in mind that package management is NOT a feature of Linux itself. You need to have other software installed to do that. Linux is just a kernel, and without any other software Linux is useless. A distro is simply a pre-setup collection of software, bundled with the kernel.

So strictly speaking, you're not talking about Linux, you're talking about Debian's APT (Advanced Package Tool,) which Debian-based distros like Ubuntu use. APT doesn't just run on Linux, it runs on BSD, GNU/HURD, Mac OS X, and more (Debian is portable across multiple kernels.) You can even get it working with Windows using cygwin, a Windows implementation of Unix environment, invented so that people could use Unix tools at work even if company policy required them to use Windows.

Also, there are many other package managing tools besides APT (RPM, packman, tgz, Portage, PBI, Autopackage, etc.) So the article doesn't apply to all Linux installations. (Although APT is the most common.) The article title might confuse a new user who was using Fedora Linux, for example.
